Overview
Memor.ia ("the app", "we", "our") is an iPhone application that helps you turn language textbook pages into study flashcards using AI. Your privacy matters. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how it is handled.
Memor.ia is developed and operated by Jean-Christophe Libbrecht, a sole trader based in Brussels, Belgium. The app is local-first: your vocabulary cards, scans, and review statistics are stored on your device and in your private iCloud account. We do not sell your data.
Data Collected
The following data types are collected as declared in the App Store:
| Data type | Category | Purpose | Linked to identity? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device Identifier | Identifiers | App functionality | Linked to identity |
| Purchase History | Purchases | App functionality | Linked to identity |
| Product Interaction | Usage data | App functionality | Not linked |
| Crash Data | Diagnostics | App functionality | Not linked |
Details
Device Identifier
On first launch, the app generates a random UUID (a unique installation identifier) and stores it securely in your device Keychain. This identifier is sent to the Memor.ia backend server to create your anonymous account and track your credit balance. It never contains your name, email address, or any Apple ID information unless you voluntarily sign in with Apple.
This identifier is linked to your account so that credits you purchase are correctly attributed to your device.
Purchase History
When you purchase a credit pack via in-app purchase, the App Store transaction is sent to the Memor.ia backend for validation. The transaction ID, product ID, and credit amount are stored in a secure ledger to prevent double-redemption. No payment card information is ever processed or stored by the app — all payments are handled exclusively by Apple.
Product Interaction
The app tracks aggregate usage counters — such as the number of pages scanned, vocabulary cards repaired, and chapters consolidated — to manage your credit balance and display your usage statistics in-app. This data is stored on the backend server linked to your device identifier.
Crash Data
If the app crashes, Apple may collect diagnostic information (crash logs, device model, iOS version) and share it with the developer through App Store Connect. This data is used solely to identify and fix bugs. It is not linked to your name or Apple ID.
Data Not Collected
Memor.ia does not collect:
- Your name, email address, or contact information (unless you sign in with Apple)
- The content of your scanned pages or vocabulary cards — these stay on your device and in your private iCloud database
- Your location
- Health or financial data
- Browsing history or data from other apps
Scanned Images and AI Processing
When you scan a lesson page, the image is transmitted to the Memor.ia backend server, which forwards it to OpenAI for AI extraction. Images are processed and then discarded — they are not stored permanently on the server. OpenAI's data handling is governed by OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
iCloud
If you enable iCloud sync, your vocabulary cards and scan metadata are stored in your private CloudKit database. This data is only accessible to you — no one else, including the developer, can read your iCloud data.
Data Retention and Deletion
Local data (cards, scans, statistics) can be deleted at any time from the profile screen using Reset local and iCloud data. This permanently removes all learning data from your device and from your private iCloud database.
Backend data (device identifier, credit balance, purchase ledger) is retained as long as your account is active. To request complete deletion of your backend account data, contact us at the address below.
Children
Memor.ia is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the app after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
